The division believes that establishing contact with commerce and industry is of paramount importance regarding its research activities and that such contact also greatly benefits its students. Some of the members of division are registered as professional scientists and nearly all members are involved in consultation of a specialist nature. Examples of recent fields of consultation include:

- Optimal placement of facilities
- Modelling cable shapes and tensions
- Determining fishing quotas
- Vehicle scheduling and routing
- General optimisation
- Allocation of limited resources
- Analysis of cryptographic systems
- Handwriting Analysis
- Computer Vision
A Bureau for Industrial Mathematics (BIMUS) exists within the division in order to facilitate consultation.
