Stellenbosch Golub Memorial Lecture

On 29 February 2008, Gene Golub would have enjoyed his 19th birthday party. On 57 previous occasions, he had to be satisfied with an approximation that was off by one unit in the last place.

To celebrate, like many others all around the world, the life of one of the creators of numerical linear algebra, we had breakfast together at the Bloukamer (top floor in Neelsie) from 08:15 to 09:15 and then went to Room A308 in the Engineering Building (map) where Dirk Laurie gave a talk on Least squares problems before and after Gene Golub. The slides of the talk, as well as some other material related to Golub Memorial Day, can be found here.
